Laser glare forces Malaysia Airlines flight to circle before landing in Kolkata
A Malaysia Airlines aircraft approaching Kolkata was delayed after a laser beam flashed into the cockpit, briefly disorienting the pilot and requiring a holding pattern before a safe touchdown.
While descending toward Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Malaysia Airlines flight MH-184 was struck by a laser beam originating from the Madhyamgram-Barasat side, temporarily blinding the pilot. The aircraft, scheduled to land at 11.20 pm, had to enter a holding pattern and make a second approach, finally touching down around 11.25 pm. All 159 passengers and crew emerged uninjured.
Airport authorities filed a complaint with the NSCBI Airport Police Station and reminded that laser illumination around the airport is illegal. The airport director highlighted that similar laser incidents have occurred before, including one during the 2025 Durga Puja festival, prompting the cessation of a nearby laser show. Investigations are ongoing to identify the source of the beam.
