Letterboxd experiences service outage, users unable to access accounts
The movie-review platform Letterboxd went offline Sunday morning, preventing users from signing in on both the app and website.
Early Sunday, users of the film-focused social network Letterboxd found themselves signed out and unable to log back in, as the mobile app repeatedly returned to the login page and the website displayed a generic error notice. The disruption began at approximately 6 a.m. PT, with DownDetector recording over 1,000 complaints. Letterboxd posted an Instagram update confirming the outage and promising that its technical team was addressing the problem.
The platform, based in Auckland, New Zealand, now serves more than 30 million members globally, a figure that grew by 10 million in 2025. Recent reports indicated that Letterboxd is in early discussions with potential buyers such as Netflix, Sony Pictures, Paramount Skydance, private-equity firm TPG and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, though none of the parties have commented. The company declined to provide further details about any prospective transaction.
