Lexus ES 500e debut offers luxury feel but lags in range and charging
The 2026 Lexus ES 500e arrives as a well-appointed electric sedan priced competitively, yet its modest battery size and slow-charging limit its appeal.
Lexus has introduced the 2026 ES 500e as the flagship of its expanded ES lineup, which now includes hybrid and two electric variants. Priced just under $52,000, the ES 500e offers a spacious cabin, high-grade materials, and optional 1,800-watt Mark Levinson sound, positioning it against premium rivals such as the Tesla Model 3. Under the hood, it uses the same 74.7 kWh battery as the 221-hp ES 350e, granting a claimed 276-mile range and a 5.1-second sprint to 60 mph, though real-world efficiency falls short of class leaders.
Charging speed is limited to 150 kW, roughly half the rate of newer EVs, and the vehicle’s nearly 5,000-lb weight reduces its agility and fuel-economy figures. The interior design, featuring a 14-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, is praised for its elegance, though the UI lacks a quick sport-mode toggle and a true one-pedal regen system. While the ES 500e delivers a quiet, refined ride, its reliance on older EV technology may deter buyers seeking longer range and faster charging.
Why it matters
Consumers get a new luxury EV option, but its limited range and slow charge may affect market competition.
