Liverpool secure loan of versatile defender Ronald Araujo from Barcelona

Liverpool have agreed a loan move for Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo to provide defensive cover, especially at right back.

Liverpool confirmed a loan agreement to acquire Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, aiming to bolster a defence hampered by injuries and limited depth. Lewis Aspinall emphasized that the move is not a permanent fix but a necessary short-term addition, particularly to cover the right-back position while other players recover. Araujo, a right-footed defender, is comfortable in both central and wide defensive roles and is praised for his combative style, one-on-one strength and aerial prowess.

His statistics include winning over five duels per 90 minutes, more than three aerial battles, and a top speed of 33.6 km/h. Aspinall highlighted that Liverpool’s high defensive line requires a player who can cover space quickly and dominate in the air, both defensively and offensively, noting Araujo’s record of 14 goals for Barcelona. While not a long-term answer, the loan provides immediate depth and versatility for the squad.

Why it matters

The loan gives Liverpool needed defensive depth and versatility for the current season.
