Living with Stage 4 Appendiceal Cancer While Raising a Young Family

In October 2023 the author received a diagnosis of rare metastatic appendiceal cancer at age 40, shortly after marrying and becoming a mother to a toddler. Over nearly three years she has undergone an estimated 45 chemotherapy sessions, several operations, port placements, and constant imaging, while shuttling between New Jersey and Texas for specialized treatment. Despite losing about 30 pounds and battling daily side effects, she remains the primary caregiver for her four-year-old daughter and a supportive spouse, all while maintaining her journalism career.

She describes the exhausting cycle of hospital stays, clinical-trial searches, and the emotional strain of breaking down in front of loved ones. Yet she finds meaning in small wins such as playing with her child, completing work tasks during infusions, and sharing ordinary moments with her family. The narrative underscores the harsh reality of living with incurable cancer and the resolve to keep fighting for her family.
