Lucid Motors launches $1.4 billion cost-cut plan centered on robotaxis and new midsize EV
Lucid Motors announced an operational overhaul targeting $1.4 billion in cash savings, driven by inventory cuts, reduced capex and a focus on robotaxi services and a midsize electric sedan.
Lucid Motors disclosed an "operational reset" aimed at generating $1.4 billion in cash savings through a combination of reduced capital expenditures, inventory optimization and lower operating costs. Under CEO Silvio Napoli, the company will cut capex by $500 million, achieve $600-$800 million in inventory savings and trim $200 million from operating expenses, extending liquidity through 2027. Workforce reductions of about 1,500 staff and the removal of a second shift at the Casa Grande plant are expected to deliver $158 million in annual savings.
Napoli highlighted three "must-win" initiatives: launching the midsize Cosmos EV, completing the AMP-2 factory in Saudi Arabia, and expanding a robotaxi service with Uber and Nuro, now overseen by a new Lucid Technologies division led by chief digital officer Kai Stepper. Production of robotaxi-specific vehicles will start in Q4 with a market debut slated for late 2026. The company dismissed recent rumors of bankruptcy consulting, confirming AlixPartners is only assisting the cost-saving effort.
Why it matters
Lucid's aggressive cost-cutting and new revenue streams aim to stabilize its finances and keep its EV ambitions alive.
