Magnitude 5.0 quake rattles area northeast of Egypt's Suez port

Early Monday morning, a seismic event measuring magnitude 5.0 occurred roughly 36 kilometers northeast of the Egyptian seaport of Suez, according to the United States Geological Survey. The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported a slightly higher magnitude of 5.4 and placed the hypocenter at a depth of 10 kilometers. In response, the Egyptian Red Crescent triggered its emergency response protocol across the governorates where the tremor was felt.

Aid organizations have urged locals to avoid buildings that appear structurally damaged. Authorities have not received any immediate reports of injuries or property damage. While earthquakes are rare in northeastern Africa, the region’s deadliest modern quake occurred in 1992, when a 5.8-magnitude shock in Cairo caused over 500 deaths and displaced thousands.
