Malawi launches container-sized battery to curb blackouts and replace lost hydropower

Malawi commissioned a 20-megawatt lithium-ion battery near Lilongwe, funded by a $20 million grant, to store solar energy and offset the loss of hydropower after a 2022 storm.

A 20-megawatt, 40-megawatt-hour lithium battery, roughly the size of a few shipping containers, was officially opened outside Lilongwe to replace capacity lost when Tropical Storm Ana damaged the Kapichira Dam in 2022. Funded by a $20 million grant from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet and constructed with Escom, Malawi's state utility, the system stores surplus solar from the country's roughly 100 megawatts of recent solar installations and discharges during evening peaks.

Since its activation, the battery has halved the combined four-hour morning and evening load-shedding periods, allowing Escom to prioritize households over industry and to run diesel generators less frequently. Minister of Energy Jean Mathanga called the project a crucial step toward a more reliable grid, while Escom’s chief operations officer Sinosi Maliyano likened it to a large power bank. The Global Energy Alliance’s Africa vice-president Carol Koech said the pilot is a modest reliability fix, not a full electrification solution, and that three more similar projects are being contemplated pending private investment. A technical “center of excellence” at Mzuzu University now hosts project documentation, attracting interest from Kenya, Uganda, Togo and other nations.
