Man attacks cyclist with hatchet on Fresno street during morning commute

Around 7:45 a.m. on Monday, Fresno Police received calls about a stabbing on the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Effie Street. A man approached two cyclists, argued with them, and then used a small hatchet to stab one rider near the right rib cage and back. Responding officers sealed off a section of Belmont Avenue and the adjacent bus station as part of the investigation.

The wounded cyclist was transported to a medical facility and is reported to be in steady condition. No names have been disclosed for either the victim or the suspect, and the police continue to search for the attacker. The incident follows several recent stabbings in Fresno, including a gas-station attack in late July and a courthouse assault in early June.
