Man denied bail after assault leaves Gold Coast patron in critical coma

Around 1 a.m. on Sunday, Haami Makiroa Burns Prescott approached Ross Burckhardt in the car park of the Coomera Boathouse Tavern and punched him in the face, according to police. The blow caused Burckhardt to fall and suffer severe head trauma, leaving him in an induced coma at Gold Coast University Hospital. Prescott fled the scene in a rideshare vehicle, was later apprehended in Ormeau, and charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

At a Southport Magistrates Court hearing, his solicitor Torik Dib claimed the assault was in defence of another patron, but the prosecutor cited CCTV and witnesses who found no mitigating factors. Acting Magistrate Gary Finger found Prescott an unacceptable risk of reoffending and denied bail; the case returns to court on September 1. Burckhardt’s brother, Paul Burckhardt, described the family as devastated and said recovery prospects remain uncertain.
