Man jailed for keeping mother’s frozen body in home freezer for years
Christopher Phillips received a two-year-four-month prison term after police found his 89-year-old mother’s body frozen in a chest freezer at their Porthcawl home.
In Porthcawl, Bridgend county, 60-year-old Christopher Phillips was sentenced to 28 months after authorities uncovered his mother Sylvia Phillips’ frozen corpse in a chest freezer placed in the family’s dining room. The freezer was purchased on March 10, 2023, two days after Sylvia’s death, and she remained there until police opened it during a welfare visit requested by her doctor. While the body was fully frozen, Phillips kept collecting her state pension, housing benefit and winter-fuel allowance, amounting to £78,190.92.
He also intercepted her prescriptions and misled medical staff about her whereabouts. The court noted that Phillips sometimes slept beside the freezer and even held her hand at times. Judge Lloyd-Clarke highlighted the intentional deception and ordered confiscation proceedings to follow.
