Man released on bond commits fatal shooting within two hours in Charlotte

David Simpson, 28, was released from the Mecklenburg County Jail on a bond for a possession-of-weapon-by-a-prisoner charge at 12:21 a.m. on July 29. Within 84 minutes, police responded to a shooting at the Country Club Apartments, where Simpson shot two men during an apparent parking dispute, killing one and injuring the other. Records show Simpson previously faced a murder charge in 2013 for the killing of Richard Bonds and has a history of violent outbursts.

Following the incident, his girlfriend, Shameka Scott, was taken into custody for allegedly helping him avoid police. Authorities are now holding Simpson without bond and charging him with multiple felonies. The case has reignited criticism of bail practices and the handling of repeat violent offenders in the city.
