A massive breach of the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta saw thousands of migrants pour into the territory, overwhelming local services and prompting the deployment of Spanish military units. The chaotic influx left many without shelter, with families and unaccompanied children sleeping on sidewalks and in parks, and resulted in at least 18 fatalities—most caused by drowning or a crush at the Tarajal beach breakwater.
Rachid Sbihi, who heads a workers’ association for Civil Guard officers, called the episode a serious humanitarian crisis and said reinforcements are only able to tend to the injured. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska are scheduled to travel to Ceuta to assess the situation. Video showed crowds of mainly Moroccan men, as well as women and children, shouting “Viva España!” while attempting the crossing, and some people also trying to return to Morocco.
The surge follows a Spanish Supreme Court decision earlier this month limiting immediate returns of sea-arriving migrants, though activists argue most newcomers were unaware of the ruling. Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni warned of possible Schengen restrictions on Spain, underscoring the broader European implications.
