Mass Prison Break and Gunfights Erupt in Western Libya
Inmates fled a detention centre in Surman while armed groups clashed in Surman and Zawiya, killing three civilians and injuring several others.
The Judicial Police Authority in Tripoli confirmed that a mass escape occurred at Surman jail while intense armed clashes broke out in the nearby towns of Surman and Zawiya. The fighting, involving rival militias, resulted in three civilian deaths and multiple injuries, though the identities of the combatants remain unclear. Salem Bahr, a community leader from Zawiya, called for an immediate cease-fire on Libya Al-Ahrar TV, stating that any side claiming victory ultimately loses.
The mayor of Surman, Mohamed Abu Snina, described the humanitarian conditions as dire but noted that a neutral force’s arrival restored relative calm. The Azzawiya Oil Company, which runs the country’s largest refinery, warned staff to stay away from the conflict zones. Authorities have opened an investigation and formed a committee to identify the escaped inmates and pursue legal action.
