Mauricio Pochettino Close to Securing Four-Year Extension as U.S. Coach

Mauricio Pochettino is on the verge of agreeing to a four-year extension as head coach of the United States men’s national team, a deal that would keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup. The proposal was reportedly tabled before the 2026 tournament and negotiations are said to be progressing well, with an announcement anticipated in the coming weeks, per comments from Andres Cantor. Pochettino, 54, led the U.S. to a Round of 32 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina, marking the nation’s first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 2002, before a 4-1 defeat to Belgium eliminated them in the Round of 16.

While the new contract secures his tenure, it includes a clause that would allow him to depart for a European club job should such an opportunity arise. The U.S. Soccer Federation is expected to formalize the agreement shortly, solidifying the coach’s future ahead of upcoming September and October fixtures.
