Max Scherzer climbs to tenth on MLB career strikeout leaderboard

In a Saturday night outing for the Toronto Blue Jays, Max Scherzer recorded his 3,516th career strikeout, officially overtaking Walter Johnson to sit tenth on MLB's all-time list. The strikeout came against Kyle Schwarber in the bottom of the sixth, marking Scherzer's fourth punchout of the game. Despite the strikeout surge, the Blue Jays surrendered solo home runs to Trae Turner and Bryce Harper, which led to an early bullpen deployment.

Prior to the game Scherzer entered with 3,512 strikeouts, three shy of Johnson's tally as recognized by the Elias Sports Bureau. He now trails only Justin Verlander among active pitchers and will aim for Gaylord Perry's total of 3,534. The milestone adds to Scherzer's career that began in 2008 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
