Mayor Mamdani expands control over NYC agencies to advance DSA agenda

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is using appointments and new office functions to tighten his grip on New York City institutions and further the Democratic Socialists of America’s goals.

Since taking office, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has staffed several city bodies with Democratic Socialists of America affiliates, including the Office of Mass Engagement’s commissioner Tascha Van Auken and housing chief Cea Weaver, who are now mobilizing tenants into unions and using public money for documentary projects. Critics argue this may breach conflict-of-interest rules that bar officials from employing city resources for non-governmental purposes.

On the Rent Guidelines Board, Mamdani’s selections approved a rent-freeze pledge despite a 5.3% cost increase for landlords, a decision now challenged in court by former Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro as arbitrary. The mayor also appointed his election attorney Ali Najmi to head the Advisory Committee on the Judiciary, where he helped block a nominee, prompting accusations of bias and further conflict-of-interest questions.

Additionally, Mamdani dissolved the advisory board of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, a move seen as antagonizing business leaders. The pattern suggests a strategy to consolidate power across city agencies to sustain a political machine beyond his term.
