McConnell staff decline to provide video update on senator's health

Following Senator Mitch McConnell’s discharge from a nearly two-month hospitalization, journalist Nicholas Ballasy approached senior staff in the Capitol seeking a video to quell rumors about the senator’s health. Chief of staff Terry Carmack, who is set to earn over $226,000 this year, ignored the question and exited toward lunch, while senior adviser David Popp, whose 2025 compensation exceeded $224,000, also declined to respond.

Critics have long demanded “proof of life” after McConnell’s June 14 fall and cardiac arrest, noting that the office has only issued repeated statements of gratitude and released two photos showing him seated with his wife, Elaine Chao. The team’s latest statement quoted the senator saying he will follow doctors’ advice, continue physical therapy at home, and stay engaged with Senate business. Ballasy also recorded several visitors entering McConnell’s residence, including his physician Brian Monahan, but none provided new health details. The Daily Beast has reached out for comment.
