Mercedes faces component shortage as Antonelli exhausts allotted power-unit parts

A recent FIA Technical Delegate's Report reveals that Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has already exhausted the full quota of power-unit components allowed for the 2026 season, including four internal combustion engines and three energy-store units. The regulations impose separate grid penalties for each component that exceeds its limit, starting at ten places and adding five for subsequent breaches. As a result, Mercedes faces a severe shortage, with only one turbocharger, one MGU-K and one ancillary part left unused.

Past penalties, such as Isack Hadjar's 30-place drop at Spa, illustrate how quickly penalties can accumulate. The team’s reliability concerns focus on electrical components, which have already caused retirements for Antonelli in Barcelona and Russell in Canada. Toto Wolff emphasized the need for continued development to convert their points advantage into championship titles, especially with upcoming races at Monza and Zandvoort where overtaking is limited.
