Michigan Planned Parenthood shuts three clinics as federal funding dries up

Planned Parenthood of Michigan will permanently close its facilities in Lansing, Livonia and Warren after a sharp decline in federal funding and tighter Medicaid rules. The agency reported a $4.2 million reduction in reimbursements and a $5.6 million deficit in under-compensated care compared with the prior fiscal year. President and CEO Paula Thornton Greear blamed recent Republican-led policies that block Medicaid payments for providers offering abortions and a Trump administration proposal to scrap Title X funding.

The group intends to consolidate care into larger regional sites and broaden virtual services across the state. Anti-abortion spokesperson Sue Liebel of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America denounced the clinics, alleging they provided dangerous abortion medication. Officials warned that similar financial pressures threaten reproductive-health providers throughout the Midwest.
