Microsoft Edge to phase out legacy ad-block extensions in favor of MV3
Edge will stop supporting Manifest V2 extensions, ending compatibility for ad blockers like uBlock Origin.
Edge is set to retire the Manifest V2 extension framework, which will cut off older ad-blocking extensions such as uBlock Origin. Microsoft reports that only 58 extensions on its store still rely on MV2, and three of those lack MV3 equivalents. Beginning this month, MV2 add-ons will be turned off by default in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels, with notifications guiding users to MV3 alternatives.
The change will expand to the stable channel, aiming to complete the consumer migration by the close of 2026, while enterprise devices will see the switch in early 2027. Affected users can adopt uBlock Origin Lite, move to browsers like Opera that still support MV2, or use Firefox. Microsoft says managed devices will not be impacted during the consumer rollout.
Why it matters
The shift removes a popular ad-blocking option for Edge users, forcing them to adopt newer extensions or change browsers.
