Mike Darnell signs multi-year overall deal with Netflix to steer unscripted content

Veteran reality-TV producer Mike Darnell has secured an exclusive multi-year overall agreement with Netflix, where he will also advise the streamer’s unscripted division.

Mike Darnell, known for his two-decade reign over reality television, has entered into an exclusive, multi-year overall contract with Netflix. In addition to producing content, he will serve as a strategic advisor for the streaming service’s unscripted programming, collaborating closely with Brandon Riegg, the vice president of nonfiction series and sports who helped recruit him. Darnell’s résumé includes a ten-year stint at Warner Bros.

Television Group after an 18-year period at Fox, where he oversaw franchises like American Idol, The Bachelor, and The Voice, as well as a range of unconventional shows. He departed Warner Bros. in 2023 following a restructuring that would have altered his responsibilities. Netflix’s unscripted leadership recently changed with Jeff Gaspin’s exit, making Darnell’s arrival a notable shift for the platform’s nonfiction strategy.
