Mike Morrice enters race to succeed Elizabeth May as Green Party leader
Former Green MP Mike Morrice has declared his candidacy for the party’s upcoming leadership contest, becoming one of two approved contenders.
Mike Morrice, a former member of parliament for the Green Party, officially entered the leadership race on Wednesday, joining the sole other approved candidate. He previously served one term representing Kitchener Centre before being unseated by Conservative Kelly DeRidder by a margin of 358 votes in the April 2025 federal election. In November 2025, Morrice was named deputy leader of the Greens and has already secured the party’s nomination for the forthcoming federal election.
The Green Party of Canada began its five-month leadership contest on June 11, after Elizabeth May announced her intention to step down while remaining leader until November. Party members will vote between November 2 and 13 using a ranked ballot, with the new leader to be announced on November 14. Morrice is scheduled to hold a media briefing in Kitchener on the day of his announcement.
