Military doctors warn that drug-resistant bugs could cripple future battlefields

During a Florida-based military medical conference, Joint Staff surgeon and infectious-disease physician Clinton Murray disclosed that about one-third of the most recent 33 U.S. combat casualties evacuated from the Middle East were colonized with bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics, with only a single case progressing to infection. He clarified that colonization is common among healthy individuals and aligns with global and intensive-care unit statistics, but emphasized that the trend signals a growing danger for the armed forces in protracted, large-scale conflicts.
Col. Jennifer Gurney, director of the Joint Trauma System, called for a shift in strategy to place wound-management and diagnostic tools nearer to the battlefield, referencing the severe infection issues encountered by Ukrainian health providers. Experts warned that without new medical advances, antimicrobial-resistant organisms could overwhelm field hospitals much like past world wars did with casualties. A 2024 Lancet study projecting over 8 million annual deaths from antimicrobial resistance by 2050 adds urgency, while draft language in the defense bill merely encourages, rather than mandates, Pentagon investment in infection control. The panel concluded that evolving bacteria represent a threat comparable to inexpensive, mass-produced drones, demanding innovative countermeasures.
