Minimally invasive heart bypass matches traditional surgery in safety and speed of recovery
A Canadian-led trial published in The Lancet shows that a less invasive bypass technique is as safe as the conventional method and enables faster patient recovery.
In a multicenter trial spanning six countries, 170 individuals receiving coronary artery bypass grafts were assigned to either the traditional chest-opening surgery or a minimally invasive side-incision technique. Published in The Lancet, the study reports that the newer method achieved identical safety metrics while patients recovered more quickly, needing fewer transfusions and less ventilator support. Pain scores and overall hospital length of stay were similar between groups.
Marc Ruel, a cardiac surgeon at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, highlighted that this is the first robust evidence that a less invasive bypass can match or surpass the classic approach, though patient selection remains crucial. Commentators such as Stephen Fremes noted that cardiac surgery has lagged behind other specialties in adopting minimally invasive options, but the findings suggest a viable alternative where expertise exists.
