MLS owners to choose new commissioner in upcoming vote next week

On Monday, Major League Soccer owners are expected to cast votes to replace commissioner Don Garber, who will remain in his post through the 2026 season before stepping down in January 2027. The shortlist includes LAFC co-owner Larry Berg, a board member and co-chair of MLS’s sporting and competition committee, and David Nathanson, a former Fox executive who helped secure the network’s 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cup rights and holds an investment in the Seattle Sounders.

Both candidates will deliver final presentations to the board, after which owners must achieve a two-thirds supermajority to elect the new commissioner. The winner will be required to divest any MLS club stakes they currently own. MLS has said the succession process has involved a thorough review of qualified candidates by its Succession Committee.
