Mount Barker Council halts Forest School SA program over safety concerns

Mount Barker District Council has issued an order for Forest School SA to cease all operations at Anembo Park, stating that the site presents considerable safety hazards. Inspectors reported damage to trees, unprotected fire pits, evidence of fires, and structures extending onto adjacent Department for Infrastructure and Transport land, with swings placed close to the South Eastern Freeway and no barrier separating children from traffic.

The council requires a formal application and approval before any future activities can occur. Bell Gower, the program’s founder, said the shutdown was unexpected and that she has submitted paperwork to reopen, though she doubts a quick return. About 40 families currently enrolled, along with many holiday participants, are distressed, and a local Scouts group has offered temporary hosting. Council officials emphasized support for nature-based learning but stressed the need for lawful and safe operations.
