Murderer of Minnesota lawmaker appears in state court for first time
Vance Boelter, serving two life sentences for the killings of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, made his initial appearance in Minnesota state court on charges mirroring the federal case.
Vance Boelter, 59, who pleaded guilty to federal charges tied to the 2025 attacks that killed former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, entered state court for his first hearing on Monday. The state case, previously on hold, now accuses him of two murders, four attempted murders, impersonating a police officer and animal cruelty. In addition to the Hortmans, Boelter critically injured state Sen. John Hoffman and his spouse Yvette, and severely harmed the Hortmans' golden retriever, which was later euthanized.
Federal prosecutors had agreed not to seek the death penalty, and Minnesota has no capital punishment. If convicted at the state level, Boelter faces mandatory life without parole. His next state court appearance is set for September 2.
