NASA Hands Over Compact Navigation Unit for Intuitive Machines' Lunar Relay Satellite
NASA supplied its NavCube3-mini navigation payload to Intuitive Machines on July 13 for integration into the company’s first lunar relay satellite, Altus-1.
On July 13, NASA delivered its NavCube3-mini navigation payload to Intuitive Machines for incorporation into Altus-1, the firm’s first lunar relay satellite. The miniature receiver, roughly the size of a shoebox and weighing 3.5 pounds, can process GPS and Galileo signals from Earth to pinpoint a spacecraft’s location far beyond Earth orbit while consuming under 20 watts of power. Built on a series of navigation advances from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the unit passed rigorous environmental tests—including launch-simulation vibration, thermal-vacuum extremes, and electromagnetic compatibility checks—followed by performance verification with simulated GNSS signals.
Altus-1 will become the lead satellite in a Near Space Network Services contract-driven constellation intended to provide communications and navigation for lunar orbiters, landers, rovers and eventually astronauts, particularly in the challenging South Pole region slated for Artemis landings in 2028. By demonstrating GNSS-based navigation around the Moon, NavCube3-mini will supply critical data for future lunar infrastructure. The partnership exemplifies NASA’s strategy of leveraging commercial partners to build a resilient, interconnected lunar ecosystem.
