NASA's PUNCH Mission Achieves Hour-Scale Solar Storm Arrival Forecast
Using continuous images from the PUNCH spacecraft, scientists predicted a solar eruption’s impact on Earth within a 30-minute window, a tenfold improvement over existing methods.
NASA’s PUNCH constellation, consisting of four low-Earth-orbit satellites, captured a coronal mass ejection from the Sun on May 31, 2025, and supplied near-continuous 3-D imagery every four minutes. Scientists inserted these data into a forecasting model that tracked the eruption’s speed and shape, producing a final arrival estimate twelve hours after launch that was accurate to within thirty minutes. This precision is about ten times better than the current five-hour forecast window.
Craig DeForest, the mission’s principal investigator, likened the advance to moving from a steam engine to an internal-combustion engine. The success shows that PUNCH’s wide-field view can reliably monitor solar storms throughout their journey, opening the door to earlier warnings and deeper insights into plasma behavior across the solar system.
