NASA Unveils State-of-the-Art Flight Dynamics Wind Tunnel in Virginia
NASA inaugurated the Flight Dynamics Research Facility, a new wind-tunnel complex at Langley, to support testing of aircraft, drones and spacecraft.
NASA celebrated the launch of its Flight Dynamics Research Facility, a cutting-edge wind-tunnel complex at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The 25,000-square-foot structure combines and upgrades capabilities of two historic Langley tunnels, featuring a 20-foot diameter vertical chamber that can reach 117 mph—twice the speed of its predecessors. Designed for both free-flight and mounted testing, the facility will accommodate larger, more detailed scale models of aircraft, drones, parachutes and spacecraft, enabling more accurate data for safety and performance studies.
Administrator Jared Isaacman called the tunnel the first major new wind-tunnel addition in more than 40 years, underscoring its importance for future aeronautics and space missions, including Artemis lunar-landing research. The project was delivered in partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration, which noted the building’s energy-efficient design and reduced maintenance costs. NASA officials and Virginia leaders said the new capabilities will strengthen industry collaborations and support the United States’ continued dominance in air and space technology.
