Nashville SC relies on squad depth for packed Leagues Cup schedule
Coach B.J. Callaghan says Nashville SC will rotate players to stay fresh during a three-game Leagues Cup stretch that includes matches against Liga MX sides and a looming clash with Inter Miami.
As the Leagues Cup begins, Nashville SC shifts focus from its MLS Supporters' Shield chase to a demanding three-match run against Liga MX clubs, starting with León on Aug. 5, followed by San Luis on Aug. 9 and Monterrey on Aug. 12. Coach B.J. Callaghan highlighted player rotation as essential to preserve the team's attacking intensity for both the cup and upcoming league fixtures, including a high-profile game versus Lionel Messi's Inter Miami on Aug. 15.
Since returning from the international break, the club has compiled a 2-1-1 MLS record, most recently drawing 2-2 with D.C. United after surrendering a two-goal halftime lead. Star striker Hany Mukhtar left that match with an injury and will be a game-time decision against León. With Cristian Espinoza still sidelined, newcomer Elias Saad is expected to get more minutes, and midfielder Josh Bauer expressed optimism about giving fresh legs to the squad.
Why it matters
Depth will determine Nashville SC's ability to compete in both the Leagues Cup and MLS without sacrificing performance.
