Navigating Streets May Lower Alzheimer Risk, New Study Suggests

A 2024 analysis of nearly 9 million U.S. death records found taxi and ambulance drivers have the lowest Alzheimer mortality among 443 occupations.

An extensive review of U.S. death certificates spanning 2020-2022 identified taxi and ambulance operators as having the lowest Alzheimer’s death rate among 443 job categories, with roughly 1 in 100 succumbing to the disease versus 1 in 60 overall. Adjustments for age, sex, race, ethnicity and education were applied, and the advantage did not extend to other driving professions that follow fixed routes, such as bus drivers or aircraft pilots.

Scientists attribute the benefit to the constant mental task of locating oneself, planning routes, and updating spatial maps, which engages the hippocampus—an area first affected by Alzheimer’s. Earlier brain-imaging work on London cab drivers showed increased gray matter in the posterior hippocampus after years of intensive navigation. Parallel research indicates that living in densely networked urban environments also correlates with lower Alzheimer’s rates, suggesting that complex spatial reasoning may build cognitive reserve. While the findings are compelling, it remains unclear whether map-based work on computers stimulates the same protective brain changes as real-world navigation.
