Netflix Co-CEO Announces Multi-Phase Storytelling Initiative with Indian Prime Minister

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to launch a multi-stage program aimed at developing India’s animation, visual effects, gaming and comics talent.

In New Delhi, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Netflix India Storytelling Initiative, a phased investment in the country’s creative pipeline. The first phase focuses on youth skill development, partnering with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies to design courses in visual effects and media technology, and providing 100 scholarships for programs such as interactive comics and e-sports management.

A second collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation will build a talent stream for audio description writers and voice artists, supporting the Prime Minister’s accessibility agenda. Netflix frames the venture as supporting India’s “Orange Economy” and the Viksit Bharat @ 2047 goals, aiming to grow a workforce capable of producing globally competitive content. The company highlighted past successes like the high-budget series “Operation Safed Sagar” as proof of Indian creators’ potential. As Netflix enters its second decade in the market, it emphasizes expanding opportunities for emerging creators to bring Indian stories to worldwide audiences.

Why it matters

The initiative could boost India's creative jobs and help Indian content reach global audiences.
