New Family Film 'The Magic Faraway Tree' Reimagines Blyton Classic for Today's Kids

Vertical’s upcoming adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree brings the 1940s children’s series into a present-day setting, according to director Ben Gregor and lead actors Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy. The narrative follows three siblings who, after relocating to the English countryside, find a fantastical tree that leads to sky-bound lands such as the candy-like Land of Goodies. Screenwriter Simon Farnaby modernized the plot, focusing on today’s kids and parental challenges, while Gregor highlighted the use of physical, edible sets to create an immersive experience.

Garfield and Foy reunite on screen, supported by a notable ensemble that includes Nicola Coughlan, Nonso Anozie, Michael Palin and Judi Dench, who portrays a refrigerator. The production marks Garfield’s first family-film role and aims to blend nostalgia with a call to reconnect with nature. The film opens in theaters on August 21.
