New study finds sugar gliders pose limited threat to Tasmania's swift parrots
A Commonwealth-funded investigation using cameras, sound monitors and necropsies found no evidence that introduced sugar gliders are killing the critically endangered swift parrot in Tasmania.
A federal-backed research project spanning two swift parrot breeding seasons in mainland Tasmania employed acoustic sensors, motion-activated cameras at 20 nests, and necropsies of both dead parrots and trapped sugar gliders. Led by Matt Webb and Leanne Wicker, the team found no confirmed cases of glider predation, even though gliders were recorded inside successful nests. Analysis of glider stomach contents showed a diet of eucalypt and acacia foliage with occasional insects, mirroring mainland Australian populations.
Instead, evidence pointed to native currawongs and introduced European starlings as occasional nest predators, though no single species was identified as decisive for nest outcomes. The authors attribute declining breeding success to a combination of competition, predation pressure and, most critically, ongoing habitat loss and fragmentation. Their report, now supplied to the swift parrot recovery team and Commonwealth authorities, calls for conservation strategies that address the broader ecosystem rather than focusing solely on sugar gliders.
