Noel Tata calls for profit-friendly reforms and new hospitals in India

At an IIM Bangalore alumni event in Bengaluru, Noel Tata, chair of Tata Trusts, criticized legal limits on for-profit educational institutions, arguing they block capital needed for high-quality colleges and drive students overseas. He noted the Trusts' collaboration with IIM Bangalore to create a School of Undergraduate Studies and expressed a desire to invest further in building premier institutions, citing past successes like the Indian Institute of Science.

Tata also outlined a health initiative to establish 40-50 general hospitals across India, with three locations already shortlisted, operating on a not-for-profit basis but using a cross-subsidy model for some commercial rooms. All patients would receive identical medical services regardless of payment tier. Additionally, he called for more rigorous measurement of philanthropy’s real impact, questioning vague claims of “touching” lives.
