Nolan's Odyssey film sparks record-breaking surge in UK poetry sales

The release of Christopher Nolan’s cinematic version of The Odyssey has driven UK poetry sales toward a historic high, with the market now on track to exceed £15 million this year.

Market research firm NielsenIQ reports that UK poetry sales are on pace to break previous records, potentially reaching £15 million or more by year-end after a 13.3% increase over the same period last year. The surge is largely attributed to Christopher Nolan’s recent film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, which propelled print copies of the ancient poem up 1,400% in the weeks following its release. Sales of The Odyssey and The Iliad together have generated nearly £1 million this year, accounting for a sizable share of the growth.

Excluding those titles, the poetry sector still shows a 7.2% rise, indicating broader consumer interest. Emerging authors like Lucas Jones, whose debut collection topped sales by value, and established Instapoets continue to drive demand, while critics such as classicist Emily Wilson have voiced strong disapproval of the film. Audiobook versions narrated by Stephen Fry and Ian McKellen have also entered top charts in the UK and US.
