Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Expected to Boost Favignana Tourism Revenue Beyond $500 Million

Filming of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” on Sicily’s Favignana island is projected to generate over $500 million in tourism income, far surpassing previous film-driven boosts.

Christopher Nolan chose Favignana, the largest Egadi Island off Sicily’s west coast, to portray Ithaca in his adaptation of “The Odyssey,” using the historic Castello di Santa Caterina and surrounding beaches as key sets. Set designer Ruth De Jong highlighted the island’s dramatic scenery, which also hosted the swineherd’s hut for John Leguizamo’s character. Following the May trailer, tourism promoters, including Airbnb, began marketing the island to international travelers, especially from the United States.

Sicilian Film Commission chief Nicola Tarantino expects the influx to bring roughly $287 million over three years and exceed $500 million overall, far outpacing the €138 million earned by Taormina after “The White Lotus.” The movie’s strong performance in Italy—$35.6 million at the box office, fourth worldwide—reinforces its economic impact, while industry figures note the broader benefit to Sicily’s cultural profile.

Why it matters

The film’s popularity could transform a small Sicilian island into a major tourist hub, delivering significant economic gains.
