North Carolina Couple Charged After 31-Week Birth on Toilet Following Abortive Drug Order

Durham County officials charged Syeisha Johnson, 18, with assault inflicting serious bodily injury on an unborn child and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and charged Elijah Speight, 19, with negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. Investigators say Johnson ordered abortion pills—mifepristone and misoprostol—from Virginia and later gave birth on a toilet at 31 weeks, delivering a baby under five-and-a-half pounds.

The infant was still pulsing when emergency personnel arrived, received CPR, and was taken to Duke Medical Center for care. The couple appeared in court, each posting a $1,000 bond, and District Attorney Satana Deberry noted they are not a threat and should remain with their families while the case proceeds. Public defender Barbara Lagemann highlighted that Johnson called 911 herself and that neither individual has prior criminal history. North Carolina law permits abortions up to 12 weeks with limited exceptions, and the FDA recommends the drugs only through ten weeks.
