Northwestern engineers unveil ultra-fast drone that blurs to near invisibility
Researchers at Northwestern's McCormick School have built a drone that spins so quickly it becomes almost invisible to the human eye.
Northwestern's Center for Robotics and Biosystems announced a new UAV named the Phantom Twist, which spins at up to 25 revolutions per second with its propeller and frame rotating in opposite directions, producing a ghost-like smudge that the naked eye struggles to track. The researchers used an AI-driven pipeline that generated 20,000 designs, narrowed them down through perception modeling, and built the most promising version after extensive simulation.
Demonstrated at the Sydney Robotics: Science and Systems conference, the drone is roughly ten times less visible than conventional quadcopters, though it still emits a whirring noise and its wires remain partially exposed. Lead investigators Michael Rubenstein and Emma Alexander explained that the approach leverages the eye's limited processing time for fast motion, effectively averaging the drone’s opaque parts with the background. Funded in part by the National Science Foundation, the team aims to improve stealth further with transparent materials and quieter propulsion, envisioning civilian uses such as wildlife monitoring and infrastructure inspection while acknowledging potential military implications.
