Obesity-linked fat molecules found to accelerate Alzheimer’s pathology, study shows
Researchers identified a lipid pathway by which excess body fat may worsen Alzheimer’s disease, and showed that correcting the imbalance improves cognition in animal models.
Scientists at Houston Methodist have traced a biological route connecting obesity to accelerated Alzheimer’s disease. The study found that excess weight increases phosphatidylethanolamines, which are packaged into circulating particles that cross into the brain, where they impair neuroimmune communication and promote amyloid plaque formation. In laboratory models, normalizing phosphatidylethanolamine levels mitigated lipid dysregulation, lowered amyloid buildup, and restored cognitive abilities such as learning and memory.
Co-lead investigators Stephen Wong and Li Yang say the findings open the possibility of treating the metabolic-brain link rather than viewing obesity solely as a peripheral risk factor. The research, published in Molecular Neurodegeneration, was supported by multiple foundations and involved collaborators from several universities. While promising, the authors caution that human trials are needed before clinical applications can be pursued.
