Ohtani Pushes Through Knee and Bicep Issues as Pitching Return Falters
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani says he is playing despite a knee problem and lingering right-biceps tightness, limiting his ability to pitch.
Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers’ two-way phenom, confirmed he is contending with a sore knee and persistent right-biceps tightness, injuries that have hampered his pitching schedule this year. The biceps issue first appeared earlier in the season, briefly subsided, and re-emerged after a bullpen session in Philadelphia, while the knee has been problematic for several months. In his most recent start versus the San Diego Padres, Ohtani exited after 110 pitches because of the biceps discomfort.
Despite these setbacks, manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani will continue to hit in the lineup provided the injuries do not deteriorate, and the club still envisions him on the mound if his knee and arm improve before the playoffs. The Dodgers plan to manage his workload carefully, with a longer-term assessment after the season to decide whether surgery might be required.
Why it matters
Ohtani’s health directly affects the Dodgers’ chances in the postseason, given his unique role as both a top hitter and pitcher.
