OpenAI and Jony Ive to debut a puck-sized, battery-powered smart speaker

OpenAI is collaborating with ex-Apple design chief Jony Ive to create a new voice-first assistant that resembles a small, ring-shaped speaker. Battery-powered and about the size of a hockey puck, the gadget will lack a screen but include animated parts, illumination, a camera system and additional sensors to signal when it is listening or responding. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports the price will exceed $300 when it reaches consumers in 2027.

Its form factor is meant to be easily moved around a home with a single hand, echoing the design of Amazon’s former Tap speaker. Functionally, it will run on more sophisticated AI models than those used in current ChatGPT mobile apps, aiming for more natural, human-like dialogue. The product could be the first of a broader lineup that OpenAI plans to introduce in the future.
