OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman donates $5.5 million to protect famed bald eagle habitat
Greg and Anna Brockman contributed $5.5 million to a campaign that secured 63 acres of forest near the live-cam nest of bald eagles Jackie and Shadow.
OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman and his wife Anna gave $5.5 million to a Friends of Big Bear Valley fundraiser aimed at buying Moon Camp, a 63-acre parcel of forest and shoreline near the Big Bear Lake bald-eagle nest. Their contribution helped the campaign exceed its $10 million goal just before a purchase deadline, preventing a planned development of 50 luxury homes and a marina. The eagles, Jackie and Shadow, are watched worldwide via a live nest cam, and Jackie recently required emergency care for severe anemia after a conflict with younger eagles.
Although her health has improved, veterinarians report a recent drop in her packed cell volume, prompting further testing. The Brockmans said the eagles inspire perseverance and a connection to nature, marking a rare environmental gift amid their usual political donations. OpenAI clarified the money came from the couple personally, not the company.
Why it matters
The donation preserves a unique wildlife habitat and stops a controversial development near a globally watched eagle nest.
