OpenAI slashes fees for GPT-5.6 Luna and Terra models

OpenAI disclosed major fee reductions for two of its newest AI models, GPT-5.6 Luna and GPT-5.6 Terra, on Thursday. Luna’s price fell by 80% to $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens, while Terra’s cost dropped 20% to $2 per million input and $12 per million output. The company said the lower rates will also be reflected in token accounting for paid Codex and ChatGPT Work plans.

In a statement, OpenAI attributed the cuts to gains in model architecture, more efficient inference hardware, and smarter context management via its software harnesses. EMARKETER analyst Jacob Bourne described the change as evidence that the era of “token maxxing” is ending, as businesses push back on rising AI bills. The announcement comes amid broader industry focus on cost, with Google touting its own efficiency gains and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella highlighting cost-efficiency as a core goal for its MAI-Thinking-1 model.
