OpenAI’s finance unit pivots to AI-driven strategic partner role

OpenAI’s finance department, led by CFO Sarah Friar, now relies on the ChatGPT Work agent to accelerate analysis, forecasting and month-end close, while emphasizing human judgment.

At a webinar, OpenAI’s strategic finance leaders described how the department, under CFO Sarah Friar, has adopted the ChatGPT Work agent to act across applications, ingest approved financial data and produce insights at a much faster pace. Demonstrations showed the AI auditing quarterly materials for inconsistencies and converting spreadsheet-heavy forecasts into statistical models, improving both accuracy and collaboration.

Monthly close processes are now automated by pulling information from platforms such as Databricks into a single validated dashboard, though final sign-off still rests with human controllers. The team highlighted new features like dynamic slide editing and a finance-assistant for quick queries, with a “CFO spotlight” that surfaces priority variances. While usage is governed and auditable, the discussion omitted specifics on data ownership and how AI decisions are audited. Hiring now values proficiency with AI tools, the ability to challenge machine outputs and convey findings swiftly to influence business decisions.
