Opposition veteran Kizza Besigye faints in courtroom during treason hearing

In a Kampala courtroom, opposition figure Kizza Besigye appeared to lose consciousness, collapsing after repeatedly demanding “stop” during his treason trial. The proceedings were suspended as guards moved to assist the high-profile defendant, who has been held without bail for several months. Besigye’s principal attorney, Erias Lukwago, is likewise detained and charged with failing to report alleged treasonous acts.

Prosecutors claim they will introduce proof that Besigye and co-accused plotted to depose President Yoweri Museveni, a charge that carries the death penalty. Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, and his People’s Front for Freedom party say his condition is critical and he should be allowed to see a doctor of his choice rather than prison-appointed medics. The case follows Besigye’s 2024 disappearance in Nairobi and subsequent appearance before a military tribunal before being transferred to civilian court. President Museveni has urged a swift trial, while his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has accused Besigye of planning his murder.
