Orange County launches probe into parents over minors' illegal e-bike incidents
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has opened more than two dozen investigations that could lead to criminal charges against parents of youths riding e-bikes illegally.
Orange County prosecutors have established a special unit to address violations tied to electric bicycles and motorcycles after a surge in dangerous rides by minors. The office disclosed 26 active investigations that may result in criminal charges against the riders’ parents. Todd Spitzer highlighted that e-bikes are the leading reason children end up in emergency rooms, describing the trend as a public-health crisis.
Recent incidents include a fatal crash that prompted manslaughter and child-abuse charges against a mother, and a separate case where a father faces child-abuse charges after his 12-year-old was injured. State law prohibits anyone under 16 from operating e-motorcycles, yet youths aged 11-14 account for most crashes statewide. The district has also recorded chaotic episodes such as teenagers riding through a Walmart aisle and a high-speed chase captured on dash-cam footage.
