Oura ring data reveals May 16 as the nation’s most physiologically stressful day

Analysis of Oura ring metrics shows May 16, driven by a Long Island Rail Road strike and a Brooklyn half-marathon, was the most stressful day for both New Yorkers and the United States.

Oura, which tracks sleep, fitness and physiological stress for more than five million subscribers, released its top-20 stressful days for the period July 2025-June 2026. The most stressful day for both New Yorkers and the broader U.S. audience was May 16, a date marked by the start of a Long Island Rail Road strike that left hundreds of thousands scrambling for alternative transport and a Brooklyn half-marathon that pushed participants’ bodies.

The company’s science vice-president Shyamal Patel explained that the ring records bodily activation, so excitement, socializing and even pleasant events can register as stress. Nationally, the same day rose to the top, reflecting New York’s sizable user base. Additional spikes appeared on NBA Finals games, New Year’s Eve celebrations and other weekend holidays, underscoring how disrupted routines and high-stimulus activities elevate physiological stress. On the leading U.S. day, users logged an average of 184.3 stressed minutes, nearly half of the day.

Why it matters

The findings show that even enjoyable events can tax the body, highlighting how modern lifestyles affect health.
